A man died Wednesday evening after he and a woman allegedly attempted to steal a sport-utility vehicle in Chicago’s Loop, police said.
A woman was in an Infiniti FX35 in the first block of East Lake Street when a man and another woman entered her SUV at about 5:45 p.m., according to police.
A struggle ensued as the duo attempted to steal the SUV from the driver, and the vehicle continued to drive ahead – plowing into a column, police said.
The crash trapped the three people inside, but firefighters helped get them to safety, and all three were taken to hospitals, police said.
The man allegedly involved in the attempted carjacking was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
Police said they did not know the condition of the two women, but said the woman who had attempted to steal the car had been taken into custody.
Police said they did not know the names or ages of any of the three people involved in the crash.
