Wind chills Friday morning may feel like 15 to 20 below zero according to an advisory in effect until 10 a.m. for portions of central, north central and northeast Illinois, said National Weather Service officials.
The Windchill Advisory, released during predawn hours Friday, reminded that frostbite on exposed skin could happen as little as 30 minutes. Officials urge people in the affected areas to wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves when braving outside.
With much colder air blowing into Illinois, weather officials called conditions frigid and hazardous Friday. They asked parents to make sure children are dressed properly if they must go outside, and for parents to limit their time outdoors.
At Midway Airport, temperatures registered at 2 degrees with a wind chill of negative 17.
